In this episode of the More Movies Weekly podcast, Greg and Dave discuss West Side Story (2021), directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist and Rita Moreno. They contrast the film to West Side Story (1961), the original film adaptation, itself an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical, directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris.
In West Side Story (2021), love, at first sight, strikes when young Tony spots Maria at a high school dance in 1957 New York City. Their burgeoning romance helps to fuel the fire between the warring Jets and Sharks — two rival gangs vying for control of the streets.
They also talk about how much it has cost us all to save Matt Damon so many times over the years in different films as well discuss the confirmed purchase of MGM Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer by Amazon.
